description This study analyzes "terrorism" from a communicative perspective. It explores the communicative, persuasive, and agitational aspects of revolutionary "terrorism." Ultimately, it is an attempt to define "terrorism" as essentially a communicative act. The intentions behind "terrorist" acts are addressed using difficult-to-obtain interview data collected directly from the source--those who practice revolutionary violence. Four in-depth interviews with key informants provide the primary data for interpretation. The most significant contribution of this report is the new light it has shed on "terrorism," i.e., the development of a communication approach to the study of "terrorism." As such, "terrorist" acts are definable as messages (with both verbal and especially nonverbal components) which are strategically and deliberately aimed at specific audiences, intentionally manipulating media channels, to elicit desired behavioral responses. Seen as messages, they possess structure, intensity, coherence, and dramatic force. As "rhetorical" vehicles, they are appropriate objects of criticism. Such critical efforts offer a key to understanding and either preventing or effectively coping with "terrorist" activities.
