(c2009)The case of Middle Eastern womenChahrour, LinaInternet -- Political aspects -- Middle EastInternet -- Social aspects -- Middle EastPolitical participation -- Middle East -- Computer network resourcesWomen -- Political activity -- Middle East -- Computer network resourcesInternet and women -- Middle EastIncludes bibliographical references (l. 136-145).The number of Middle Eastern women using the Internet as a means to be politically active has been increasing over the last few years. From blogging to e-government, the Internet is becoming indispensable for international political interaction. This research therefore asks: When and how does the Internet (or other new communication technologies) help Middle Eastern women to become politically active (and more empowered)? This research attempts to illustrate the methods used by Middle Eastern women on the Internet in order to make their voice heard. This research also looks at the different theoretical concepts, as well as the transition from traditional to online political activity and activism. In addition, this research looks at how International Organizations and NGOs located in the Middle East use the Internet to promote their roles. This said, this research is well aware of the advantages and the disadvantages that the Internet could bring to Middle Eastern women's empowerment. The analysis of this thesis will show how the proliferation of weblogs in the Middle East are allowing women to express their opinions, which has caught the attention of politicians and a great number of the public both at the domestic and the international level.1 bound copy: ix, 144 leaves; 30 cm.
