Description
Summary:
This conference contribution was presented by EL-Saka Zeinab, Ibrahim Mohamed. Plant Genetic Resource Dept. Desert Research Center, Egypt, (18th Edition of the Qatar University Life Sciences Symposium Bio-Environment: Advances and Innovations. 2025).

Tomato breeding program has been begun since 2008 in Maryout research station Alexandia, Desert Research Center, Egypt. Breeding program started with different tomato genotypes which are sensitive and tolerant tomato genotypes to climate change. They evaluated to study their performance, crossed, selected, and developed in the field and greenhouses to get genetic improvement.

The tomato breeding program objectives are to obtain plants are being tolerant to heat and drought stresses, and against diseases with commercial quality, desirable characteristics, and total yield under different stresses conditions. Program outputs which are obtained, new three successful varieties tolerant to heat and drought stresses, named Alexandia, El Saka and Sahary all of them are registered in 2023 and protected in 2024 by ministerial decision No.,629,630,631 after evaluation up to the bases of international union of the Protection of New Varieties (UPOV) for Distinctness, Uniformity and Stability testes (DUS).

New varieties have high fruit setting and high fruit quality in solidity, perfect color, acidity, V.C., TSS, sugars and high total yield under heat stress conditions. The varieties are suitable for cultivation in Africa, Arab countries, and desert areas.

Through the program, the procedures concluded selections, backcrossing, selfing, genetic stability, chemical, genetics and statistical analysis were made. Tomato breeding program has more and more of promising lines and hybrids tolerant to climate change abiotic and biotic stresses, such as early blight, late blight diseases and vascular wilt, root-rot, and wilt diseases.

Other Information

Conference information: 18th Edition of the Qatar University Life Sciences Symposium Bio-Environment: Advances and Innovations.
