| description | <p dir="ltr">Qatar’s use of sport has been the subject of significant scholarly attention over the past decade. Much of this work has coalesced around the 2022 World Cup, discussing both the challenges that Qatar faced in hosting FIFA’s flagship tournament and how the latter shaped the Gulf state’s sport ecosystem. However, there is a notable lack of scholarly work on Qatar’s post-World Cup sport policy in comparison. This paper addresses this knowledge gap by examining Qatar’s future strategy for sport to determine its importance to Qatar society. This article’s first original contribution to the existing literature on sport in Qatar is to ask whether a domestic sport ecosystem is still important to the country. This question is answered by arguing that the benevolent authoritarianism embodied by Qatar’s ruling elite has long used sport to show generosity, affection, and authority when required to the country’s residents, and that this practice continues. The article’s second original contribution is to outline the measures to take to ensure that this ecosystem remains viable in the future. The first of these focuses on high-performance athletes to suggest a greater emphasis on internal naturalisation to recognise the country’s significant non-Qatari Arab population. The second offers insight into how space can be made for grassroots sport within Qatar’s sport ecosystem.
