description <p dir="ltr">Mangrove forests are vital "blue carbon" sinks that play a critical role in maintaining ecological balance and safeguarding sensitive coastal habitats. These ecosystems, particularly along the coastline of Qatar, are becoming increasingly threatened by hydrocarbon pollution. This study investigated the adaptation and diversity of hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria in the rhizosphere of two Qatari mangrove sites: the heavily polluted Al Ruwais and the less impacted Al Thakhirah. Using MALDI-TOF MS, the isolated hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria were identified and categorized based on their protein profiles. The findings revealed that <i>Pseudomonas aeruginosa</i> dominated the Al Ruwais site. In contrast, Al Thakhirah exhibited greater bacterial diversity, including <i>Lysinibacillus xylanilyticus</i> and <i>Acinetobacter calcoaceticus</i>. Our findings suggest a shift in the diversity of cultivable hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria, likely influenced by the type and extent of hydrocarbon contamination in each site, rather than a reduction in total microbial biodiversity. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) further categorized the strains into four distinct groups, showing that even within the same species, bacterial responses to environmental stressors varied. These variations were reflected in variations in growth, biosurfactant activity, and hydrocarbon degradation capabilities, with differing protein profiles linked to varying hydrocarbon removal efficiencies.
