| Summary: | <p dir="ltr">Acetic acid plays a central role in numerous industrial processes, chemical reactions, and food products, highlighting its broad significance and diverse applications. Developing advanced sensing technologies capable of real-time, sensitive detection of acetic acid is crucial for addressing analytical challenges and meeting the growing demand for efficient monitoring solutions across various industries. The present study investigates the efficiency of cerium-nanoparticle-loaded molybdenum disulfide (Ce-MoS2 ) nanocomposites for detecting acetic acid. Transmission electron microscopy revealed the deposition of cerium nanoparticles onto MoS2 flakes. The cerium nanoparticle density and size increases on the MoS2 surface with an increase in cerium salt concentration during synthesis. Among the synthesized nanocomposites, Ce0.6 -MoS2 exhibited the highest sensitivity for acetic acid detection. The Ce0.6 -MoS2 sensor demonstrated a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.37 ppm within the linear detection range of 0-500 ppm. The sensor selectivity for acetic acid was investigated by analysing the response towards other interfering compounds. Moreover, the sensor displayed exceptional stability over 100 acetic acid exposure and recovery cycles. Furthermore, the repeatability of the Ce0.6 -MoS2 sensor was assessed over 30 days, and a marginal decrease of 5% in response was observed from day 1 to day 30.</p><h2>Other Information</h2><p dir="ltr">Published in: Chemistry Africa<br>License: <a href="https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0" target="_blank">https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0</a><br>See article on publisher's website: <a href="https://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s42250-025-01339-4" target="_blank">https://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s42250-025-01339-4</a></p> |
