description
Replacing the steel with the Al alloy is an effective strategy for structural lightweight design and high-performance manufacturing. To enhance the mechanical properties of Al/steel dissimilar joint, a novel technique named extrinsic-riveting friction stir lap welding (ERFSLW) was proposed, which can combine the advantages of mechanical riveting and metallurgical bonding. SiC-reinforced Al matrix composite bars in the prefabricated holes were stirred and mixed with Al alloys, forming rivets that strengthened the mechanical riveting effect. The formation of a thin IMCs layer with a thickness of less than 2 μm, contributing to the metallurgical bonding. The tensile-shear strength of the joint was 215.33 N/mm. The joint fractured at the Al/steel interface and the Al/bar interface, showing the typical mixed fracture characteristic rather than the conventional brittle fracture, which exhibited a satisfactory ductility characterized by three steep drops.
