Description
Summary:
Visualisation of motor and reward tract construction in the manuscript titled, White Matter Changes in Reward Circuits of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis: A Fixel-Based Study of Appetite Loss.

Please see the manuscript for the full methodology.

The corticospinal/corticobulbar tract was generated by selecting streamlines that traverse the precentral gyrus, internal capsule, midbrain, and pons, while excluding streamlines that also traverse the cerebellum and thalamus. The cerebellothalamic tract was generated by selecting streamlines that traverse the cerebellum, thalamus, and precentral gyrus. The medial forebrain bundle was generated by selecting streamlines that traverse the midbrain and the medial orbitofrontal cortex. The uncinate fasciulus was generated by selecting streamlines that traverse the orbitofrontal cortex and the temporal pole. The cingulum bundle was generated by selecting streamlines that traverse the JHU atlas cingulum mask. The fornix was generated by selecting streamlines that that traverse the JHU atlas fornix body mask. The pontocerebellar tract was generated by selecting streamlines that traverse the pons and cerebellum. The temporopontine tract was generated by selecting streamlines that traverse the temporal lobe and pons. Left and right components were generated separately for bilateral tracts. Tracts were inspected manually (by JC and HL) and corrected for erroneous streamlines. The code and imaging data used to generate these tracts are available on OpenNeuro: https://doi.org/10.18112/openneuro.ds005874.v1.1.0.

Acknowledgments

This visualisation was created in MRTrix3 (v3.0.4).

We thank Dr Hannes Almgren and Dr Arkiev D'Souza for their guidance in creating this visualisation.

See the following tutorial by Dr Matteo Mancini on how to make a glass brain: https://neurosnippets.com/posts/glass-brain/
