Резюме:
Self-preservation is one of the strongest human instincts. This instinct is manifested in the continuous endeavour to attain food, water, shelter, and safety. Various religious traditions, including Islam, emphasised this notion of preservation of life through encouraging, and sometimes mandating, seeking help and cure from life-threatening illnesses. These religious traditions also prohibited all forms of violence against one’s body (self-harm or suicide) and against others (homicide). However, data shows that a significant number of people accelerate their departure from this life by engaging in suicidal thoughts and behaviours. The World Health Organization (WHO) (2019) reports that humanity loses one person to suicide every forty seconds, which brings the total number of lives lost to suicide annually to approximately one million. Suicide ranks as the second leading cause of death among young adults (15–29 years), second only to traffic accidents. Among Muslims, previous studies indicated overall lower rates of suicide. However, a more recent report showed that, in certain contexts, Muslims might exhibit more suicidal behaviours than their counterparts from other religious groups (Awaad et al. 2021).

Other Information

Published in: End-of-Life Care, Dying and Death in the Islamic Moral Tradition
License: https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/
See chapter on publisher's website: https://dx.doi.org/10.1163/9789004459410_010
