Thesis advisor is Dr. Salwa Beheiry. Soft copy is available (Thesis, Completion Certificate, Approval Signatures, and AUS Archives Consent Form).Playing a key role in the economic and social development of a nation whilst having an influential impact on the environment, the construction industry is now grasping the goals of sustainability. Sustainability has a solid definition on a broader level, however, in the construction context, there is no standardized definition or consensus about what the term sustainable construction encompasses. The research gap identified is that different practitioners perceive sustainability in the construction sector from different perspectives. The multiple perceptions amongst practitioners in the construction sector impedes the implementation of sustainability in construction projects due to absence of a unified understanding of sustainability in the construction context. It is highly problematic for such a ubiquitous topic, to have multiple interpretations as it may lead to conceptual chaos which compromises its implementation and the exploration of its full potential. The various perceptions divide the existing knowledge and research related to this field. The aim of this research is to set a benchmark for the perceptions governing the understanding of sustainability in the construction context amongst practitioners working in the UAE’s construction industry. The objective of this research is to collect and analyse the existing perceptions governing sustainability amongst the stakeholders in the UAE’s construction sector, where their overall level of awareness of sustainability, their perceptions of the scope to which sustainability can be implemented in construction, and their perceptions of the merits and the barriers associated with sustainability are collected. To collect the existing perceptions, a survey that was verified by an expert panel, was distributed to the stakeholders working for various fields related to the UAE’s construction sector including contractors, clients, consultants, subcontractors, suppliers and government authorities’ employees. The analysis of these multiple perceptions was done using the relative importance index. This analysis assisted in drawing conclusions that reflected the understanding of the UAE’s stakeholders’ perceptions in regards to sustainability in construction. Moreover, the analysis of the collected data lead to the identification of the least common aspects that the stakeholders in the UAE’s construction industry relate sustainability to, which generated ideas for future research to promote these factors.College of EngineeringMultidisciplinary ProgramsMaster of Science in Construction Management (MSCM)Beheiry, Salwa2023-03-06T06:58:16Z2023-03-06T06:58:16Z2022-11info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersioninfo:eu-repo/semantics/doctoralThesisapplication/pdf35.232-2022.61http://hdl.handle.net/11073/25180en_USoai:repository.aus.edu:11073/251802026-04-23T05:58:56Z
