It answers the following questions: How is the schoolscape linguistically constituted? What macro and micro policies inform the schoolscape? Does the schoolscape reflect students’ linguistic repertoires? The data consists of signs collected from classrooms, school and government policy documents, survey data, a semi-structured interview, and a guided tour of the school. The findings reveal that English is the most frequently occurring language in the schoolscape and that there are no explicit policies governing languages on signs in the school. However, there are some unwritten expectations that the schoolscape should mirror the urban linguistic landscape by featuring Arabic and English on all signs. The collected signs reveal that, at the classroom level, this expectation is not fulfilled. The predominantly monolingual schoolscape is also not reflective of students’ multilingual linguistic repertoires. It is recommended that the school increases multilingualism in the schoolscape by giving students more opportunities to create signs in languages of their choice. This study foregrounds multilingual expatriate experiences and is the first to investigate a schoolscape in the United Arab Emirates.College of Arts and SciencesDepartment of EnglishMaster of Arts in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (MA TESOL)Bilikozen, NeslihanParlak, Ozgur2024-09-16T10:52:17Z2024-09-16T10:52:17Z2024-05info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersioninfo:eu-repo/semantics/doctoralThesisapplication/pdf29.232-2024.03https://hdl.handle.net/11073/25587en_USoai:repository.aus.edu:11073/255872026-06-11T06:49:01Z |
