| Summary: | Inclusive education is considered a fundamental component of education that ensures that that every student, regardless of their unique characteristics or challenges, gains unfettered access to quality education and is empowered to participate fully in society. This research aims to examine the effectiveness of the implementation of inclusive education policy in charter schools in Abu Dhabi. Grounded in the principles of social constructivism and inclusive education theory. This research adopts a qualitative approach that uses semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions, and document analysis to generate data. Participants were principals of charter schools, special education teachers, operational inclusion managers, heads of inclusion, special education coordinators (SENCOs), and parents of students with special needs. The findings indicate that the implementation of policy measures is often miles apart from the policy declaration. School culture as a significant preparation area is highlighted in the study as a valuable determinant for students’ integration and non-discrimination on the grounds of their diversity. In addition, there is an appreciation of the principles of inclusive education as highlighted by special education teachers and parents, indicating a positive effect of integration foremost on the positive improvement of students’ performance and self-esteem. However, the research also reveals some significant barriers to effective implementation of the strategy, including resistance to change and scarce resources, among others. In order to support and enhance the discussion, the analysis of current policies and procedures can also help shed more light on these barriers, along with the recommendations regarding their elimination. The study concludes with action guidelines for future steps in favor of inclusive policies and practices. This includes the development of consistent political guidelines, sufficient financial and other resources, and multifaceted support facilities. Thus, by focusing on the interdependence of risks and opportunities in the context of the study, this research provides significant advancements in the development of strategies for improving access to education for all children in Abu Dhabi charter schools and strategies to improve the quality of schooling for all children. |
