الملخص:In this article, I would like to reflect on the philosophical situation of our contemporary world in relation to a period that was called modernity and that is now perhaps behind us, now that we have entered the epoch of post-modernity and even perhaps something more posterior to post-modernity itself, since post-modernity is already a somewhat dated concept, or even outdated, which refers to the second half of the 20th century, whereas the kind of philosophical situation of our contemporary times is, I believe, somewhat different. What I will try to do is to focus on a very important current of modernity which developed in the 18th century under a movement that was called the Enlightenment, and to see whether the vision of the Enlightenment, which carried modernity until the 20th century, still holds today, and if yes, what are the challenges that stand before us to maintain it alive? The promise of the Enlightenment was to set mankind on a course of scientific, technological, and moral progress, and it was confident that such progress could be made by resting entirely on the rational powers that humanity was vested with. By the free and responsible use of logic, critical thinking, scientific research and experimentation, speculative reflection, humanity was seen to have the power to improve its material and spiritual condition of existence in the world. And so, the question that I want to ask here is how this vision, the vision of the Enlightenment, can still be used as a conceptual framework in today’s contemporary setting, given the challenges that we face?
