Removal of bacterial contaminants and antibiotic resistance genes by conventional wastewater treatment processes in Saudi Arabia: Is the treated wastewater safe to reuse for agricu...
Published 2015“…Quantitative microbial risk assessment (QMRA) determined that only chlorinated effluent should be permitted for use in agricultural irrigation as it achieved an acceptable annual microbial risk lower than 10−4 arising from both P. aeruginosa and A. hydrophila. However, the proportion of bacterial isolates resistant to 6 types of antibiotics increased from 3.8% in the influent to 6.9% in the chlorinated effluent. …”

Selective optogenetic stimulation of the retrotrapezoid nucleus in sleeping rats activates breathing without changing blood pressure or causing arousal or sighs
Published 2015“…Combined optogenetic activation of the retrotrapezoid nucleus (RTN; a CO2/proton-activated brainstem nucleus) with nearby catecholaminergic neurons (C1 and A5), or selective C1 neuron stimulation, increases blood pressure (BP) and breathing, causes arousal from non-rapid eye movement (non-REM) sleep, and triggers sighs. …”

Liver resection for liver metastases from nondigestive endocrine cancer
Published 2012“…Liver resection is currently the treatment of choice for patients with liver metastases from colorectal cancer; 5-year survival rates as high as 58% have been reported with this approach and establish surgery as a curative option in patients with this form of advanced malignant colorectal disease.1 and 2 Patients with liver metastases from neuroendocrine cancer also benefit from liver resection with 5-year survival rates of up to 74% and reduction of disease-specific symptoms justifying liver resection in this patient cohort.3, 4, 5 and 6 In contrast, the benefit of liver resection for patients with liver metastases from nondigestive endocrine cancer (hepatic nondigestive endocrine metastases [HNEM]) is controversial as most of these patients present with coexistent extrahepatic metastases.7, 8 and 9 Previously published data on outcomes after resection of HNEM suggest that surgery may improve survival in selected patients. …”

Reply to Comments by Kakkar and Dahiya
Published 2014“…Initial reports describing the use of bedaquiline in patients with MDR-TB and extensively drug-resistant TB are promising.3,4 Fortunately, the World Health Organization (WHO) has recently issued an interim policy guidance recommending that bedaquiline may be added to a WHO-recommended regimen in adult patients with MDR-TB when an effective regimen containing 4 second-line drugs in addition to pyrazinamide cannot be designed, and when there is documented evidence of resistance to any fluoroquinolone in addition to multidrug resistance.5 Similarly, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has also issued provisional guidelines recommending that bedaquiline may be used for 24 weeks in adults with laboratory-confirmed pulmonary MDR-TB when an effective regimen cannot otherwise be provided; on a case-by-case basis in children, persons with HIV, pregnant women, persons with extrapulmonary MDR-TB, and patients with comorbidties when effective regimen cannot otherwise be provided; and on a case-by-case basis for durations longer than 24 weeks when an effective regimen cannot be provided.6 Both WHO and CDC emphasize the need for careful monitoring of patients on bedaquiline therapy for safety concerns.5,6 Until further data become available, the authors believe that patients who meet eligible criteria according to current guidelines may benefit from bedaquiline therapy with careful monitoring for potential side effects and drug interactions.…”
