Age–sex differences in the global burden of lower respiratory infections and risk factors, 1990–2019: results from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019
Published 2022“…Age-standardised incidence and mortality rates were 1·17 times (95% UI 1·16–1·18) and 1·31 times (95% UI 1·23–1·41) greater in males than in females in 2019. Between 1990 and 2019, LRI incidence and mortality rates declined at different rates across age groups and an increase in LRI episodes and deaths was estimated among all adult age groups, with males aged 70 years and older having the highest increase in LRI episodes (126·0% [95% UI 121·4–131·1]) and deaths (100·0% [83·4–115·9]). …”

Modulation of SLFN11 induces changes in DNA Damage response in breast cancer
Published 2023“…Finally, as a definitive and specific way to modulate SLFN11 expression we implemented SLFN11 dCas9 (dead CRISPR associated protein 9) systems to specifically increase or decrease SLFN11 expression.

Results

After confirming the previously reported correlation between methylation of SLFN11 promoter and its expression across multiple cell lines, we showed in-vitro that decitabine and IFN-γ could increase moderately the expression of SLFN11 in both BT-549 and T47D cell lines. …”

Mixed siliciclastic-carbonate-evaporite sedimentation in an arid eolian landscape: The Khor Al Adaid tide-dominated coastal embayment, Qatar
Published 2020“…These offshore-migrating eolian-derived sediments are being redistributed by tidal currents in an otherwise low-energy coastal zone, where in situ formation of carbonate mud and a low-diversity skeletal assemblage is ongoing within salinity-restricted environments. Three depositional sectors are delineated: 1) an energetic, linear, fault-controlled Entrance Channel into which the eolian dunes spill directly; 2) a relatively deep (up to 20 m) Outer Lagoon, interpreted to represent a flooded karst-collapse structure; and 3) a sprawling, low-energy, shallow (<2 m) Inner Lagoon occupying low-lying areas between deflated eolian dunes.Physical oceanographic modeling, integrating multi-seasonal current meter and tidal gage measurements, demonstrates tidal current flow velocities are relatively high in both the Entrance Channel and at the constricted entrance to the Inner Lagoon. …”

Effectiveness of Positron Emission Tomography for Predicting Chemotherapy Response in Colorectal Cancer Liver Metastases
Published 2010“…For example, a few years ago an extrahepatic metastasis effectively eliminated surgical resection, but a combination of chemotherapeutic options and surgical techniques has expanded the indications for resection and increased the population of patients who may benefit.1,2 Neoadjuvant chemotherapy has increased the resectability rate by 11% to 37%.1 Unfortunately, greater than 80% of patients undergoing hepatic resection will have recurrences, mostly within the first 2 years.2 Nonetheless, the only hope for cure is resection, and prior surgical dogma based on the number of lesions, size of the tumor-free resection margin, and presence of resectable extrahepatic disease must be questioned.3- 5 The current standard approach to surgical planning is contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for specific tumor characteristics or contraindications to CT.6 Several series showed that focal extrahepatic disease, an isolated pulmonary lesion, can be safely resected, with 5-year survival rates of 29% to 58%.7,8 In 1 series,7 17 of 30 patients required 3 or more resections. …”
